Iced Earth’s show in Copenhagen only marred by the fact that this brillant band still has to play the small clubstages – they deserve so much more

There are probably a lot of clever things to be said about Iced Earth. But one particular quality strikes me every time I hear the Florida fivesome: How truly passionate about their craft they are.

Despite changing line-ups and numerable ups and downs Jon Shaffer has pursued his life’s dream now for almost three decades. And you can f…… hear the struggles over the years and the teeth-clenching determination in the man’s music when Iced Earth deliver.

And you could hear it at Copenhagen’s Small Vega club. With singer Stu Block in rare form the band simply excelled in the disciplin we all know and love as "Heavy Metal”.

Okay, the sound mix was a bit shaky in the beginning but from fourth song – de soulwrenching semiballad "If I Could See You” – and via masterclasses in metal like "The Hunter”, "Vengeance Is Mine” and "My Own Savior” through to the masterful "Watching Over Me” and signaturesong "Iced Earth” there was preciously little to complain about.

So just for a change I won’t complain. Not about the music anyway. But having said that it’s a crying shame that Iced Earth so many years into their career still have to play glorified livingrooms like Small Vega.

Light and shade
Iced Earth’s music deserve much bigger stages. Yeah, obviously you can hear the Iron Maiden and Judas Priest influences in their music but the band is really quite original. It can be difficult to pin down in words but for one Jon Schaffer has his own distinct way of playing his riffs. Also Iced Earth are that rare beast in Heavy Metal who rarely just gallop through the songs for the sake of sheer brute force (mind you; not that there’s anything significantly wrong with THAT). But there’s light and shade and a special care for moods in Iced Earths delivery  - which creates dynamics often absent in this particular genre. And then you can add the aforementioned passion.

Those qualities deserve a lot more fans and the sizeable stages that would follow them. After all we all learned that Iced Earth get even better when they play arenas when the band supported Volbeat last year.
