Down play it heavier than ever on "Down IV"

DOWN, "Down IV – Part II" (Roadrunner)

Dansk version

Over the years quite a lot of you have probably heard Metallica singer James Hetfield’s returning question, just before the band kicks off "Sad But True":

"DO YOU WANT HEAVY?!"

If you’ve answered this question in the affirmative you can safely welcome Down’s "Down IV – Part II" into your collection.

From the opening moment this is the musical equivalent of being a tired whale’s mattress. It’s heavy as the steps of a tired chain gang dragging their way back to prison through the humid heat of Down’s home town of New Orleans.

It’s heavy enough to make the aforementioned Metallica song sound like Bon Jovi. Finally this music is fuelled on so many colossal metal riffs of such uniform quality that they’ll make the riffmaster general – Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath – benevolently shake his head and smile, thinking "what have I started here!" – as guitarists Pepper Keenan and Bobby Landgraf dig out yet another monstrous riff from early Black Sabbath’s surplus warehouse and land that riff straight between the listener’s eyes.

They do that hard and they do it well. The music is tuned down to an extent where strings probably almost are dragged over the studio floor. Never mind that though, ‘cause they have their art down to a tee and tracks like "Steeple", "Bacchanalia", "Sufferer’s Years" and the eminently epic "Conjure" send most other so called "stoner rock" bands back in the dole queue before you can yell "Iron Man".

There’s not much in the way of traditional melody here, but you live with both that and the fact that Philip Anselmo won’t ever win any contests regarding varied vocals. Quite simply because these riffs are so many and so good and because Down despite the constant heaviness are surprisingly adept at varying themselves and thus play this stuff with plenty of dynamics.
